July 22, 2024, UK, Winchester, Hampshire: Leading UK communications infrastructure and media services company, Arqiva, has been selected by gas distribution network SGN to deploy its fully managed Managed Connectivity service across 230 sites throughout England and Scotland. The future-proofing network management solution will bring together multiple technologies into a single, cohesive service, and ensure that SGN’s critical data is supported by a resilient network that delivers seamless connectivity during the five year contract.

The Managed Connectivity service will use a closed end-to-end customer network to establish secure and highly available connections between SGN’s devices in the field and its command and control systems. To ensure robustness, the Managed Connectivity service uses a combination of cellular and satellite technologies and will provide SGN with a range of different equipment based on the coverage and data requirements of each site. Arqiva will be delivering both primary and secondary communications for the gas distribution company.

Following installation and commissioning, Arqiva will be providing the day-to-day management of network operations. Leveraging decades of experience in moving data and managing networks both reliably and securely, the service will also ensure data security is upheld in line with SGNs CAF and NIS security frameworks.

We’ve been partnering with SGN since 2011, and are pleased to be able to support them with an evolution of our proven, resilient & fully managed solution.

Today’s utility networks are facing a unique set of challenges, not least the need to balance costs with the need for greater visibility and control of their core and remote assets. Our Managed Connectivity offer, delivering future-proof connectivity in responses to these challenges, enables SGN to continue to focus on giving their customer the best clean energy experience.

Mike Smith, Executive Director of Smart Utilities Networks at Arqiva

We already have a great relationship with Arqiva so were delighted that the team was able to find a new solution for us. Offering a fully managed service, combined with deep expertise in critical national infrastructure and strong cyber-security credentials we knew Arqiva was the right partner for us.

Andrew Quail, Chief Transformation and Information Officer at SGN

About SGN

SGN manages the network which distributes natural and green gas to approximately six million homes and businesses across Scotland and southern England. Our pipes deliver gas safely, reliably and efficiently to each of these customers.

We perform an essential 24/7 service to keep everyone in our communities safe and warm. If anyone smells gas indoors or outside, they should dial the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999* and an engineer will visit that location to carry out the required checks.

We’re committed to caring for our customers, especially those in vulnerable circumstances, working with specialist organisations on initiatives aimed at making a positive impact on society and improving the lives of the people in our communities.

Alongside the UK and Scottish Governments and the other gas distribution networks, we’re developing the world’s first zero-carbon gas grid and shaping a net zero future for the UK.

*Calls are free and lines are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These calls are recorded and may be monitored.
